If you have travelled to work via the road between the Denial Bay turnoff & On The Run early this morning chances are you’ve spotted an odd looking creature toting a bag & a stick. Yep! That was me. Picking up litter from the sides of the road in an attempt to clear this town entrance / exit of trash. (NO! I am not being punished with x amount of hours of community service lol.)
Because I believe it’s pointless to be putting effort into attracting visitors to our town or trying to educate them to respect our environment & not leave their rubbish on our beaches when the first impression they get upon entering the town from the West is that we simply don’t care. If we did would we allow our roads to be lined so visibly with trash?
Further; I also believe that no matter how good their stay, if upon leaving the town towards the West their last impression of us is streets lined with rot & environmental carnage, they will be a bit more backwards in feeling good about talking up Ceduna.
I also believe that a town that lives right on the ocean simply cannot be this irresponsible with plastics & things that harm marine life!
If you agree with any of my thoughts above or just don’t want to live in a trash town, please join Clean Up Ceduna on Facebook & nominate an area you would like to adopt as your area to caretake & keep litter free.
There are many arguments & although I agree with all of them, the fact is the litter remains & we need to step up & say “enough is enough!”
Any extravagant, time consuming, cost involving plans to draw visitors to our town is never going to be as effective as it could be until we roll up our sleeves & clean up our act! Start with the basics & get them all the way right, then we can build on a foundation of community pride – results are only going to be celebrated when they belong to everyone as a whole within the community.
I would like to thank those active in litter picking, you are doing an awesome job & invite anyone, any family, any work team, friend group, walking group, sporting club or team, anyone, to join Clean Up Ceduna & nominate a way that you are willing to be involved. Big or small – it’s all a very welcome contribution.
I personally will be working my way from Denial Bay turn off to Smoky Bay turnoff via the heavy vehicle bypass for starters as I want both entries / exits tidy. I would love some volunteers to help clear the Denial Bay road prior to their upcoming jetty markets. Many hands will make it swift work, can you help?
