Last night I took the opportunity to attend a forum which was hosted by a strong representation of local police offering direct face-to-face communication with a senior representative from each of our major areas of local policing.
I had heard of the meeting only 20 minutes prior to it starting so I left what I was doing & made my way to town. Due to being unprepared I had intended on just observing & listening however, when being offered a space for immediate answers & conversation with senior officers in areas from officers on the ground to officers in court & traffic, crime & domestic violence, it was too good an opportunity to sit back & just listen.
Some issues facing the skate park area were raised & discussed with members of the community advocating for children who use the facility & are experiencing bullying & disrespect towards their personal property. Rocks being thrown at vehicles was also mentioned. The police panel expressed their knowledge of these issues & informed the meeting of several approaches being taken to address them.
The panel highlighted the value in immediate feedback & reporting to police of inappropriate behaviour & property damage.
My questions were as follows:
Main CBD businesses face breakage, client disturbance, verbal obscenities, shoplifting, theft, vandalism, litter, loitering, spitting & what can business managers do to further thwart these results of, what is mostly, unsupervised children?
The panel answered with a strong insistence on the need to inform police of any incidents & to NOT feel it isn’t worth communicating to police. All information can be useful to the issue as a whole & can benefit all businesses.
There are foot patrols every shift & businesses are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to stop police & let them know what’s happening with them on that day. Also call the police station or, if outside the hours of 8:30am – 5:00pm, to call 131 444.
The anti-bullying campaign has gained serious traction over the past year but at what point is bullying reportable & actionable in regard to police & are local police actively working with local schools to educate children on the subject?
The panel explained that bullying becomes an issue to be reported to police in an instance of a threat to person or property or harmful or intimidating physical contact. Police are working locally with schools in the area of bullying.
Is ICE an issue in Ceduna?
I also went along the panel from crime, court, domestic violence, traffic & all agreed that their area did not have significant issues with this drug within the local community at this time.
What further can be done about the safety of intoxicated people along the highway by the Fruit Fly Inspection Point & the Denial Bay road?
I explained that I was highly concerned about the sun glare on the Denial Bay road at the time of afternoon that people are intoxicated & a time when Denial Bay residents are driving home from work after 5:00-5:30 pm & further that visitors to the area often head out to see Denial Bay unaware of the sunglare & the likelihood of intoxicated people on & along the road in poor visibility. I explained that even though we were talking about a relatively small group, they are intoxicated people, possibly living with addiction & I felt that so long as there is a person whose life was at risk it was our responsibility to ask how we can do better.
The panel agreed & felt that the issue in general had been improving due to the work of several agencies but also felt that they could speak to involved services about further presence during the times of the sun glare issue.
The meeting was closed with the reaffirmation that the job that the police do locally is reliant on the communication, reporting & feedback that they receive from the community. The best way to ensure that we are doing all that we can to further improve our already wonderful community is to have the line of communication open with the local police station.
Again; outside the hours of 8:30am – 5:00pm, please call 131 444
This is because the sergeant may not be able to answer your call due to attending another issue such as a disturbance in the cells, therefore; logging your call with the above number is the best way to ensure your call is not missed.
